The Contrarian Prize Lecture - Against the Grain: How a brave Headteacher spearheaded an educational revolution
Katharine Birbalsingh won the 2019 Contrarian Prize for turning the educational orthodoxy, on how best to teach children, on its head. She made headlines in 2010 after publicly speaking out about how lack of discipline and low standards in inner city schools had left the education system broken and kept “poor children poor”.

She pulls no punches, and has argued that teachers tended to be blinded by leftist ideology, but that many of the necessary changes to the education system require conservative thinking. High expectations, competition, tough exams and good behaviour, are all essential in her view to ensure children have the best chance to achieve their potential.
Irrespective of whether you agree with her, there should be space for open debate on the most effective manner in which to teach children.

Join us to hear Katharine’s extraordinary story and learn about the culture within her school that provides the foundation for its success.
